Bioprocess development and improvement supports EIC beneficiaries and other innovators developing biobased and biotechnology processes by helping them bridge the gap between laboratory research and industrial application. We focus on scalable bioprocess development from the earliest project stages, ensuring that processes are designed with industrial transfer in mind. Activities are carried out across a range of fermentation volumes to secure a smooth transition from lab to larger-scale operations. In the laboratory phase, we operate more than 35 stirred-tank bioreactors (1-10 L), which are used to optimize media composition and key process parameters. Development work is guided by Design of Experiments (DoE) methodologies to systematically improve microbial growth, product yield, and overall process robustness. Depending on the project needs, we design and optimize batch, fed-batch, and continuous fermentation processes, as well as in situ product removal (ISPR) strategies to enhance productivity and process efficiency. These activities aim to deliver a scalable, predictable, and industrially relevant process that is ready for further scale-up and technology transfer. Throughout the project, our team collaborates closely with the EIC beneficiaries to align technical objectives, success criteria, and scale-up strategies with the intended commercial and deployment goals.
