Failure Analysis and Troubleshooting Service

CERIC - Central European Research Infrastructure Consortium

Italy

Service ID:

EP114S3
Service description

This individualised service supports EIC Beneficiaries that are facing performance issues, degradation, malfunction or unexpected behaviour in materials, prototypes or devices. The service provides targeted diagnostic support using advanced analytical and characterisation techniques across CERIC Facilities. It is designed to help Beneficiaries identify the root causes of failure and define corrective actions, covering technologies from TRL 3 to TRL 8. The first phase of the service consists of a free initial troubleshooting consultation, during which the Beneficiary presents the failure symptoms, development context and all available data. CERIC experts assess the case, define initial potential failure causes or mechanisms and outline the most relevant analytical strategies to correctly determine the problem causes. In the implementation phase, CERIC performs a customised multi-technique workflow, which can include microstructural, compositional, interfacial, mechanical or chemical analysis. In-house experts interpret the findings and deliver a report that help to identify the origin of the malfunction and contributing factors. Suggestion of potential effective corrective strategies or recommendations on materials can be provided to support material substitution, processing adjustment or further targeted testing. This service is designed for innovators developing materials, devices, components or early prototypes in several sectors. The outcomes expected include a reduction in development delays, improved prototype robustness and a faster TRL progression thanks to evidence-based troubleshooting. Sector
Sector agnostic
Technology Readiness Level
TRL 3 – Experimental proof of concept
TRL 4 – Technology validated in lab
TRL 5 – Technology validated in relevant environment
TRL 6 – Technology demonstrated in relevant environment
TRL 7 – System prototype demonstration in operational environment

Financial requirements

The service is free of charge for the first phase and full price for the second phase (implementation), calculated according to the type of instrument and the full cost of the support requested: €500-6.200 daily (8 hours). For irradiation studies special sample handling is needed at a cost of €120/sample. For some specific techniques the data analysis and report could have a separate cost: €130/ hour or €50-600 /sample depending on the technique, type of samples and support needed. To determine the exact cost of the service according to the Beneficiary's needs, please contact: ilo@ceric-eric.eu. Open access for non-proprietary research is free of charge, provided the results are made publicly available after a three years embargo period.

Disclaimer related to service

Beneficiaries can enrol on a rolling basis, but sample safety and the availability of the Facility must be confirmed before acceptance (according to the operational schedule of the Facility). Services are provided via remote access (mail-in of samples), though other modes are also available, depending on the EIC beneficiary’s needs.
