Service ID:

EP33S2
Service description

An ongoing service focused on the development, modification, and testing of materials and substances with a high degree of biocompatibility. The service includes the evaluation of the mechanical properties of surface coatings applied to medical devices or implants used in orthopaedics, traumatology, spondylolisthesis, minimally invasive surgery, or dentistry. The service will enable EIC beneficiaries to carry out tests on the physicochemical properties of surface coatings and to modify the surface and structure. Specialist equipment will be used to produce 3D surface roughness maps. The service also includes the deposition of coatings by physical methods using an ultrasonic coating system, a physical vapour deposition system, or an atomic layer deposition technique, and the structural characterisation of metallic, polymeric, ceramic, and composite biomaterials. The service helps to establish optimum technological conditions for the production of layers and coatings, assess the corrosion resistance of metallic biomaterials with a modified surface in conditions simulating the human body environment, assess the quality of surface layers with controlled resorption on inert bioceramic substrates, and coatings on structural materials used in medical devices. Experienced staff carries out the electrochemical characterisation of a wide range of engineering materials for a variety of applications. The service can be provided onsite. Consultancy services are provided online. The service is aimed at all types of organisations that need to modify, test, optimise or develop the structure or surface of biomedical implants, devices, surgical tools, or any biomaterial. The duration of the service will be tailored to the needs of each EIC beneficiary.
