Service description

i-TRIBOMAT offers one of Europe’s most complete and versatile tribological testing capabilities, supported by a network of more than 130 specialised test benches across leading European research centres. This unique infrastructure enables the characterization of friction, wear, lubrication, sealing performance, and surface interactions under an exceptionally wide range of operating conditions. We test materials and components under ambient, high-temperature, cryogenic, vacuum, and hydrogen (H₂) atmospheres, as well as with dry, boundary-, mixed-, and full-film lubrication using oils, greases, solid lubricants, or customer-specific fluids. Our equipment accommodates high loads and high speeds, long or micro-strokes, oscillating or rotational motion, and complex rolling–sliding, fretting, or reciprocating contacts. Metals, polymers, composites, ceramics, coatings, additive-manufactured parts, and full industrial components—such as bearings, seals, bushings, gears, or sliding systems—can all be tested. Our platform includes pin-on-disk, block-on-ring, SRV/reciprocating tribometers, bearing-on-shaft rigs, thrust washers, fretting benches, vacuum tribometers, high-temperature cells, cryo modules, and hydrogen-compatible tribosystems. We capture coefficient of friction, wear rates, running-in behaviour, thermal response, transfer layer formation, vibration, leakage, and failure mechanisms through high-precision instrumentation and real-time monitoring. Beyond experimental testing, i-TRIBOMAT provides advanced analytics, numerical modelling, data interpretation, and expert consultancy, leveraging Europe’s largest tribology database and harmonised procedures. We support customers in understanding complex material behaviours, optimising component design, selecting lubricants or coatings, and diagnosing failure modes. Many projects also include the identification of the most representative test method to ensure strong correlation with real operating conditions. By combining advanced infrastructure with deep expertise, i-TRIBOMAT delivers application-relevant, industry-ready insights that accelerate material development, de-risk innovation, and support the qualification of tribological systems.

Financial requirements

The Tribological Characterization service is offered as a paid service, with costs depending on the test bench, environmental conditions, and analysis depth. Standard pricing ranges from €150–€250 per hour or €1,200–€2,000 per day, covering test execution, monitoring, data processing, and reporting.

Disclaimer related to service

The Tribological Characterization service is provided on a best-effort basis using validated methods, calibrated equipment, and harmonised procedures. While i-TRIBOMAT operates more than 130 specialised test benches, results obtained under controlled laboratory conditions may not fully reproduce behaviour in the final application. Many projects therefore include an initial phase dedicated to identifying the most representative test method and establishing the best correlation with real operating conditions. All tests rely on the samples and information provided by the client, who remains responsible for their suitability and safety. i-TRIBOMAT is not liable for any consequences arising from the use or interpretation of results beyond the agreed scope.
