Techno-Economic Assessment (TEA) for Scale-up and Industrialisation Feasibility
Italbiotec srl Società Benefit
Service ID:
EP880S1"This individualised service supports EIC beneficiaries in evaluating whether their technology, proven at laboratory or pilot scale, can be technically and economically viable at the industrial level. It is particularly relevant when innovators are approaching scale-up decisions and need to reduce uncertainty before committing significant resources.
The service is designed to help beneficiaries cross the “Second Valley of Death” between demonstration and commercial deployment by identifying critical cost drivers, scalability constraints and the minimum production conditions required for economic sustainability.
The service is structured in three phases:
- Analysis of available experimental data and definition of an industrial-scale process scenario.
- Industrial operations simulation for the identification of technical bottlenecks and key variables affecting productivity, energy consumption, raw materials use and overall process efficiency, including optimisation scenarios.
- Integrated economic assessment including CAPEX, OPEX, cash flow and definition of the minimum viable production scale required to achieve sustainable operations.
The expected outcome is a structured feasibility report providing quantitative evidence to guide scale-up strategy, R&D prioritisation and plant development planning. The assessment reduces technical and economic risk, supports internal decision-making and strengthens the company’s positioning in discussions with industrial partners and potential investors.
The service is delivered by in-house experts in techno-economic modelling and industrial biotechnology. The main tool used is the software Super Pro Designer, integrated with proprietary scripts and routines."
The service is offered on a fee-for-service basis. The requested fee ranges from €25,000 to €30,000, depending on the scope and data availability. The standard professional rate is €150 per hour. The final budget is defined after a scoping discussion and may be structured into sequential Work Packages.
The service is offered on a rolling basis and is continuously available to EIC beneficiaries. There are no fixed application deadlines. The typical duration of the activity is approximately 3-4 months, depending on scope, data availability and alignment requirements. A detailed timeline and implementation schedule are defined jointly with the beneficiary at the start of the engagement.
