Scale-up and custom manufacturing of biobased processes

Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant (BBEPP)

Belgium

Service ID:

EP241S1
Service description

BBEPP enables EIC beneficiaries with biobased technologies (biomass pretreatment, biocatalysis, (gas) fermentation, green chemistry and product recovery and purification) to bridge the valley of death between research and commercialisation and to cover the TRL4-8 phase with open access pilot equipment and scale-up expertise. The journey of an innovative biobased process from the lab to an industrial scale generally involves three phases. In process development projects, after transfer of the strain and technology, BBEPP improves the space-time yield of the product, reduces the energy, water, ingredients and materials consumption and selects scalable unit operations. During the scale-up phase, BBEPP tests the selected industrial equipment and unit operations and optimises the settings. Finally, the first batches of the innovative product are produced to test the quality and applications and to enter the market before taking the financial risk of building a proprietary production line or entering a large scale CMO. BBEPP’s in-house engineers and technicians perform these steps in an integrated and iterative way, in which they can be combined or repeated to meet the specific objectives of each customer and project. Each service project is flexibly adapted to the customer’s needs and targets. The timing, scope and size of the projects can therefore vary. At the end of the project, the customer receives all produced product batches as well as a technology transfer report for implementation at a CMO or own production line. BBEPP always operates in full confidentiality to protect the customer's intellectual property.

Indicative price range examples are:
a) €12,500/week for lab scale development work,
b) €30,000 - €40,000/run of 150 L scale fermentation and downstream processing.
Prices are process dependent (e.g., duration of fermentation) and exclude raw materials, consumables, transport. Prices include preparation and reporting (full data package).

Disclaimer related to service

The process development, scale-up or custom manufacturing activities come with a service fee. Depending on the needs of the EIC beneficiary, and the scope of the project (some examples: scale-up from lab to 15m³ scale, optimisation and scale-up of downstream processing, custom manufacturing at 75m³ scale), an adapted quote will be provided.
